TREFINASA is a company stablished in 1999 with the first objective of manufacturing aluminium clad steel (ACS) wire. These wires are used in electrical industry, more concretely in manufacturing optical ground wire (OPGW) and strands for conductors installed in overhead electrical lines. Trefinasa, by applying the same manufacturing process, manufactures aluminium tubes with optical fibre inside for OPGW conductors, as well as extruded Aluminium profiles for insulated cables, extruded Aluminium flat wires for the automotive, electrical and renewable industries and extruded and/or calibrated Aluminium tubes for refrigeration, home appliances, automotive industry and rivets). Since 2018 and once the acquisition of the rights for MADE HERRAJES was completed, TREFINASA offers a complete solution including in its range of products the fittings for insulator string, bolted and compression clamps and accessories up to 500kV OHL. Trefinasa supplies to the most relevant European OPGW and ACSR manufactures, as well as to different electrical companies and appliance companies.

HTLS GAP Conductor - ACS and Alumoweld Wire

TREFINASA deployed in 2006 the manufacturing GAP type technology for High Temperature Low Sag conductors. These conductors are able to dispatch higher power and to reduce joule losses at standard operating temperatures, keeping the same safety clearances than their equivalent hard drawn aluminium conductor due to the possibility to continuously run at much higher operation temperature. Nowadays TREFINASA is developing the ACSS type technology for High Temperature Low Sag conductors to complete the wide range of available products for the upgrade of existing OHL at a very beneficial investment-cost ratio.

DEFINITION

The covered aluminum steel wire for compression, internationally known as Alumoweld or ACS, is a wire of high resistance whose cover is carried through an extrusion process, that adheres the aluminum by pressure and heat.

Once the covering process is finished, the wire is drawn until its final diameter without any alteration in the aluminum steel ratio.

PROPERTIES

CORROSION RESISTANCE

Due to the important thickness of present aluminum in the wire (minimum 10% of its radius), the ACS provides an excellent corrosion resistance, being equivalent to EC grade aluminium.

Also the use of ACS combined with aluminium wires in ACSR conductors allows to prevent the galvanic corrosion that can occur when placing in contact different metals.

HIGH CONDUCTIVITY

If compared to copper, the ACS presents a conductivity of 14%,20%, 27%, 30% or 40%, in accordance with the layer of aluminium which uses (5%,10%, 14%, 15%, 25% of the radius).

If compared to the galvanized steel, its conductivity is three times bigger.

For high frequency application, where the “skin effect” is an important factor (for example, lighting faults) the conductivity of the ACS is approaches 100% of aluminium because the highest electrical current density is concentrated in the external part of the conductor.

HIGH RATIO RESISTANCE WEIGHT

Among its different wires used in the electric lines, the ACS offer the best ratio resistance-weight between all. Its tensile strength is 8 times bigger than the aluminium wires of same diameter and little more than the double relating to the weight.

If compared to the galvanized steel wire of same diameter and same mechanical characteristics, the weight of the ACS is 15% less, and maintains its mechanical characteristics through the time due to the excellent protection offered by the aluminum layer.

APPLICATION

Due to its excellent characteristics, this product is used extensively in the cable industry for the manufacturing of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW), conventional stranded earth wired and steel reinforced cores for phases conductors, all to be used in overheads lines. Also, it can be used in alternative applications an helical hardware for overhead lines or those where the resistance to the corrosion is an important factor.
